OSTC Welding Means Success
In only its second year, the Ohio Strategic Training Center will be conducting courses in a brand new state-of-the-art welding facility. Instructors Pete Lambert and Brett McGraw said that they are looking forward to working in such a great environment. The lab houses 19 welding stations that provide opportunities for students to learn Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick), Oxyacetylene Welding (Oxyfuel) Metal Inert Gas (Mig), and Tungsten Inert Gas (Tig) cutting and welding processes. The 32 week class offers students a pathway to work in the construction field or refines their skills to work in other fields like production or fabrication. The courses implement a curriculum that covers blueprint reading, safety, and all the needed subject areas.

The instructors are proud of the successes made in just the 1st year of the program, most of the 26 students are now employed in the workforce. 27 year old Seth Cowgill, a Wheelersburg native, enrolled in the 9 month program and immediately fell in love with the trade. Seth wanted to pursue a career in construction upon leaving the program and did exactly that. Last week Seth drove 9 hours to Wever, Iowa and passed a construction job pipe test. He was then instantly hired to a unit working 60 to 65 hours a week. Two days later he was certified in another specific weld which bumped his pay to $38.76 an hour on straight time with $110.00 a day per diem. Cowgill said, “It’s unbelievable that I have no field experience but because I learned a needed skill I am making twice as much per hour as many of those who have worked on construction sites for longer than I’ve been alive.” He went on to say, “The courses took a lot of sacrifice, but if I can do it anyone can. A year ago I entered the program with no welding skills or experience, but in less than a year later I am certified in Mig, Tig, and Stick.” Cowgill is just one of the many success stories that are coming back to instructors and the training center.
